Closing & Grounding After Spellwork

How to come back to earth gently (and not feel like a fried nerve). 🌍✨

A lot of books focus on how to start a spell.

Far fewer talk about how to stop.

But closing and grounding are just as important as the spell itself, especially if you:

  • are sensitive to energy
  • are neurodivergent
  • dissociate easily
  • have trauma, anxiety, or chronic illness

Good closing = you don’t walk away:

  • buzzing
  • spacey
  • randomly emotional
  • headachey / wired-tired
  • accidentally still “open” to every passing mood and spirit

Let’s make ending your spells safe, gentle, and repeatable.

1. Why Closing Matters

When you cast, you:

  • focus intensely
  • stir up emotion and energy
  • maybe invite in guides, ancestors, or deities
  • shift your state of consciousness (even just a little)

If you don’t deliberately close, you might:

  • stay half in/half out (floaty, ungrounded)
  • carry the spell’s heightened emotion into unrelated parts of your day
  • feel extra-sensitive to people, noise, or vibes
  • feel like “everything is a sign” and get overwhelmed

Closing and grounding tell your body and spirit:

“The working is done.

You can come fully back now.

It’s safe to rest.”

2. The Three Parts of Closing

You don’t need a huge ritual—just hit these three beats:

  1. Signal “We’re Done”
    • words to mark completion
    • send thanks / release any spirits invited
  2. Return to Ordinary State
    • snuff candles, put tools away, break the focus
  3. Ground & Soothe the Body
    • food, water, touch, movement, or rest

Think of it like shutting down a game:

  • you save
  • exit the program
  • and then stand up and stretch

3. Step 1 – Mark the Spell as Complete

At the end of your spell, say something like:

“This working is complete.

May it unfold in right timing

for my highest good and the good of those it touches.

So mote it be / It is done.”

You can:

  • clap your hands once
  • ring a bell
  • snap your fingers
  • knock lightly on the table three times

If you invited specific beings (ancestors, guides, deities):

“Thank you, [Name/Description],

for your presence and support.

You are respectfully released from this working.

Go in peace, as I also go in peace.”

You don’t have to feel anything special.

The point is to make a clear boundary.

4. Step 2 – Close the Space

Physical actions help your brain understand “ritual is over now.”

You might:

  • snuff or blow out candles
  • close your circle (if you cast one) with: “The circle is open, but unbroken. The work is done; I return to ordinary time.”
  • put tools back in their place or cover the altar
  • open a window briefly to let the energy move

For low-spoon days:

  • simply turn off your main ritual light
  • say: “This space returns to ordinary use.The spell continues without my constant attention.”

Then leave the room for a bit.

5. Step 3 – Grounding: Coming Back to Your Body

Grounding = bringing your awareness and energy back into:

  • your body
  • the present moment
  • this physical world

Choose one or more of these, based on spoons:

A. Food & Drink (My #1 recommendation)

  • Drink water, tea, juice, something non-alcoholic.
  • Eat something solid:
    • bread, crackers, fruit, nuts, whatever you can manage.

As you do, think or say:

“I bring my energy back into my body.

This food and drink help me be here, now.”

B. Touch & Sensation

  • Rub your hands together until warm, then press them over your face or thighs.
  • Press your feet firmly into the floor (or bed).
  • Hold a stone, plushie, or mug and notice its weight and texture.

Say:

“I am in my body.

I am in this room.

I am safe enough to be present.”

C. Movement

  • Shake out your hands, arms, shoulders.
  • Stand up and stretch.
  • Do a quick walk around the room or to another room.

Even 10–20 seconds helps.

D. Sensory Reset

If you tend to get floaty:

  • splash cool water on your face
  • change the lighting (turn on main lights, or dim if you were bright)
  • smell something grounding (coffee, earth, rosemary, favorite perfume)
  • put on a comfy hoodie or wrap yourself in a blanket

Tell yourself:

“Ritual time is over.

This is my normal, everyday life again.”

6. Special Notes for Sensitive / Neurodivergent / Trauma-Aware Witches

If you:

  • dissociate easily
  • have PTSD or complex trauma
  • are autistic / ADHD / highly sensitive
  • get overwhelmed by sensory input or emotion

…closing becomes extra important.

Signs you might not be fully grounded:

  • feeling unreal or “foggy”
  • difficulty tracking time / tasks afterward
  • headaches or pressure in head
  • sudden mood swings with no clear trigger
  • hyper-vigilance (startling at every noise)

If that happens, try:

  1. Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.
  2. Eat something salty or crunchy.
  3. Text a trusted person or write a short note:
    • “I just finished a spell, now I’m grounding and will rest.”

And remember:

If ritual work consistently destabilizes you, it’s okay to scale down your practice and focus on grounding, protection, and very gentle magic for a while.

Your nervous system is part of your altar.

7. What About Long-Burn or “Ongoing” Spells?

Some spells keep working after the ritual:

  • jar spells on your altar
  • honey jars
  • long-burning candles (over several days)
  • wards and protection grids

You still close and ground yourself after the initial setup.

Think of it like this:

  • You built a device; now it runs in the background.
  • You are no longer “in ritual mode” 24/7.

You can check in occasionally:

  • shake the jar
  • relight a candle
  • refresh wards

Each time:

  1. Do a mini opening (1–2 lines)
  2. Tend the spell
  3. Say: “I thank this working for continuing in right timing.I now step back into ordinary life.”
  4. Ground again (even briefly).

8. If You Forget to Close (It Happens)

You may realize hours later:

  • “Oh no, I didn’t really close that spell.”

That’s okay. You can do a retroactive close.

  1. Sit comfortably.
  2. Imagine the space where you worked.
  3. Say: “Any energy or beings still connected to that working,I now respectfully release you.The spell continues only as it serves my highest good. The ritual itself is closed.I call my own energy back to me now, cleansed and grounded.”
  4. Drink water, stretch, eat something if you can.

You’ve closed the loop.

9. A Simple Closing Script You Can Use Every Time

Copy-paste this into your Book of Shadows and tweak as needed:

“My working is complete.

What needed to be set in motion, is set.

I thank any allies, guides, or powers who assisted—

you are now respectfully released from this space.

Go in peace, as I go in peace.

I call my energy back to myself,

cleansed, grounded, and whole.

The circle is open, the spell continues,

and I return fully to my body and my life.

So mote it be.”

Then: water, food, movement. Always.

Book of Shadows Prompts

  • How do I usually feel after spellwork—energized, drained, floaty, wired?
  • What grounding methods have worked best for me in the past (magical or mundane)?
  • What would be a simple, repeatable closing routine I can commit to, even on low-spoon days?
  • Are there any past workings I feel might still be “open”? Do I want to do a retroactive closing ritual for them?
