Esbat Rituals (Full & New Moon Celebrations)

Monthly check-ins with your magic, not monthly exams. 🌙🕯️

In many modern witchcraft paths, Esbats are rituals held on the Full Moon (and often the New Moon too).

Where Sabbats follow the wheel of the year (seasonal holidays), Esbats follow the rhythm of the Moon—a more personal, emotional, and magical cycle.

In Witchful Healing, Esbats are:

Regular, simple moments to pause, check in, and do intentional magic

that fits where you’re at—energetically, emotionally, and practically.

You do not have to celebrate every single one.

You do not have to do it the same way every time.

This page gives you:

  • a simple Esbat structure
  • New Moon Esbat templates
  • Full Moon Esbat templates
  • solo + group + low-spoon variations
  • gentle reminders about safety, consent, and mental health

What Is an Esbat, Really?

Think of an Esbat as:

  • A date with the Moon
  • A monthly check-in with yourself and your magic
  • A time to:
    • re-center your intentions
    • process the last few weeks
    • do one spell or ritual that supports you

Esbats can be:

  • long and elaborate → circle casting, long invocations, big spell
  • short and sweet → candle, journal, 10 minutes in your bedroom

Both are valid.

A Simple Esbat Structure (Works for Both New & Full)

You can use this as a template and swap in New or Full Moon content.

Basic flow:

  1. Prepare the space (optional altar, clear surface, light cleaning)
  2. Ground & center (arrive in your body)
  3. Acknowledge the Moon & phase
  4. Main working (intention-setting or manifestation/illumination)
  5. Offerings & gratitude (if you like)
  6. Close & ground again

You can do this:

  • Solo
  • With a friend or partner
  • In a group or online circle

You can also skip steps if needed. This is a pattern, not a law.

New Moon Esbat – “Seed & Intention” Ritual

This leans into the New Moon: Intentions & New Beginnings page you already have, but wraps it into a full Esbat flow.

Vibe

  • Quiet
  • Reflective
  • Planning + calling in

Time

  • Around the New Moon (same day or within 1–2 days before/after).

Solo New Moon Esbat (Approx. 20–30 Minutes)

You’ll need (adapt as needed):

  • A candle (or LED / small light)
  • Paper & pen (or journal / notes app)
  • Optional: a bowl of water or tea, a small stone or charm

1. Prepare Your Space (5 minutes)

  • Tidy one small area where you’ll sit.
  • You can wipe the surface, light a candle, or just clear a bit of clutter.
  • As you do, think: “I make space for a new cycle.”

2. Ground & Center (3–5 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably, feet on the floor or curled up.
  • Feel where your body is supported (chair, bed, floor).
  • Take 3–5 slow breaths.
  • Say: “The last cycle is complete.I call my energy back to myself.”

(You can use your grounding/centering techniques here.)

3. Acknowledge the Moon (1–2 minutes)

  • Light your candle / turn on your light.
  • Even if you can’t see the Moon, say: “Under this New Moon, seen or unseen,I stand at a new beginning.”

4. Reflection & Intention-Setting (10–15 minutes)

  • Journal or think on:
    • “What did the last month teach me?”
    • “What do I want more of in the next one?”
  • Then write 1–3 intentions in clear, kind language: “I invite more ______ into my life.”“I’m ready to grow in ______.”“I open to opportunities for ______ that are right for me.”
  • Read them out loud or silently.

5. Seal the Intentions (5 minutes)

  • Place your hand over your paper or journal.
  • Say: “These are the seeds I plant under this New Moon.May they grow in ways that are good for me and harm none, including myself.”
  • Fold the page or mark it.
  • Optional: place a stone/charm on top as a “weight” to anchor it.

6. Gratitude & Close (2–3 minutes)

  • Sip your water/tea or place a few drops on your tongue.
  • Whisper: “Thank you for this new start.I release control of the how, and commit to the next small step.”
  • Snuff the candle.
  • Do something grounding: snack, stretch, wash your hands.

New Moon Esbat in a Group (In-Person or Online)

Keep it simple. You can:

  • Open with shared grounding & calling in the New Moon.
  • Each person writes intentions privately.
  • Optional: everyone shares one intention or theme (only if they want to).
  • You may do a shared candle lighting and say together: “Together under this New Moon,we plant our intentions in trust and respect.May each of us grow in the ways we truly need.”
  • Close with shared gratitude and grounding.

Consent note:

No one is required to share their intentions. “My intention is private” is perfectly acceptable.

Low-Spoon New Moon Esbat (5 Minutes Max)

  • Sit or lie in bed.
  • Whisper: “New Moon, I’m too tired for big ritual. My intention this month is simply to _______.Help me find small ways to support that.”
  • Fill in the blank with one thing (rest, safety, clarity, stability, ease, etc.).
  • That’s the whole Esbat.

Full Moon Esbat – “Illumination & Power” Ritual

This builds on your Full Moon: Power & Manifestation page, framed as a celebration.

Vibe

  • Peak energy
  • Illumination
  • Celebration + release

Time

  • On the Full Moon (or within a day on either side).

Solo Full Moon Esbat (Approx. 20–30 Minutes)

You’ll need (adapt as needed):

  • A candle (white/silver/whatever you have)
  • A bowl of water or cup of tea
  • Optional: crystals, tools, tarot/oracle deck
  • Journal/notes app

1. Prepare & Ground (5 minutes)

  • Lightly tidy your altar or table, or just clear a small space.
  • Sit, feel the support beneath you, and breathe.
  • Say: “The Moon is full.I ground myself as I meet this energy.”

2. Acknowledge the Full Moon (2–3 minutes)

  • Light the candle.
  • If you can see the Moon, nod or raise your cup toward her.
  • If not, just picture or think of her.
  • Say: “Under this Full Moon,I allow what has grown to be seen.”

3. Reflection – What Has This Cycle Grown? (7–10 minutes)

  • In your journal, answer:
    • “What has changed since the New Moon?”
    • “What small wins or shifts am I proud of?”
    • “What has become too much, too heavy, or clearly not meant for me?”
  • Be honest but kind. This is not a performance review.

4. Charging & Blessing (5–7 minutes)

  • Place any tools you want to charge near your candle or on a cloth.
  • Hover your hands over them (or just focus your gaze).
  • Say: “By the light of this Full Moon,I awaken and bless these toolsfor clarity, protection, and support.”
  • Visualize/decide that they soak up the Full Moon’s clarity and power.

5. Release & Gratitude (5 minutes)

  • Over your bowl of water or cup of tea, say: “I release [one pattern, fear, or habit] that this cycle has shown me.”
  • Name just one thing you’re genuinely ready to soften or let go.
  • Then speak: “I am grateful for: [name 1–3 things from this cycle].”
  • Drink your tea or pour some water back into the earth or sink.

6. Close (2–3 minutes)

  • Snuff the candle.
  • Ground (stretch, shake out hands, eat something, touch something solid).
  • Say: “This Esbat is complete. My magic continues as I live and choose.”

Full Moon Esbat in a Group

Again, keep it flexible:

  • Open with grounding and a simple Full Moon acknowledgment.
  • Group reflection: each person names:
    • one thing that has grown
    • one thing they’re proud of
    • (optional) one thing they’re releasing
  • Do a shared charging:
    • Everyone places tools in a central area or in front of their camera.
    • Say a shared blessing over them.
  • Close with a group gratitude: “We thank the Moon, each other, and ourselvesfor what has been witnessed here. Our circle opens, but our connection to our own paths remains.”

Consent note:

Remind everyone they never have to share more than they’re comfortable with.

Low-Spoon Full Moon Esbat (5 Minutes Max)

  • Stand or sit by a window, in your bathroom, or in bed.
  • Whisper: “Full Moon, thank you for getting me through another cycle.”
  • Name one thing you’re proud you survived, did, or learned.
  • Optionally touch a favorite object and say: “I charge you to remind me I’m stronger than I think.”

Done. That’s an Esbat.

Esbat Safety, Sovereignty & Mental Health

A few Witchful reminders:

  • You are never required to do intense magic just because the Moon is Full or New.
  • If you’re:
    • overstimulated
    • dissociative
    • manic
    • severely depressed
    • or dealing with crises
→ it’s okay (and wise) to keep rituals minimal or skip them entirely.
  • Dark topics (shadow work, heavy release) can trigger trauma. You’re allowed to:
    • keep things light
    • do only grounding & gratitude
    • bring deeper work to therapy or a safe support person instead

Esbat ≠ obligation. Esbat = opportunity.

Esbats Over Time: Building a Relationship

If you want to deepen your lunar practice, you can:

  • Keep a “Moon Log”:
    • Each New/Full Moon, jot:
      • date
      • main intention or focus
      • one feeling
      • one observation
  • Notice patterns:
    • What do you tend to ask for?
    • What keeps coming up to be released?
    • Are there months where New or Full feels easier/harder?
  • Let yourself evolve:
    • Your Esbats in 6 months may look totally different than now.
    • That’s growth, not inconsistency.

Journal Prompts: Designing Your Esbat Style

In your grimoire, create a page titled:

“My Esbat Style”

Explore:

  • Do I feel more drawn to New Moon, Full Moon, or both?
  • How much time/energy do I realistically have for monthly ritual?
  • What feels more supportive:
    • quiet, introspective Esbats
    • celebratory, high-energy Esbats
    • or a mix depending on my capacity?
  • What are my non-negotiables (if any)—like:
    • “I like to light a candle every Full Moon,”
    • or “New Moon = one page of journaling.”

Then write a gentle guideline for yourself, like:

“For now, my Esbat practice will be:

– New Moon: 10–20 minutes of intention-setting and journaling

– Full Moon: 10–20 minutes of reflection and gratitude

– If I’m low on spoons: 1 sentence + 1 breath is enough.”

Because it is. 🌙

Esbats aren’t tests you pass or fail.

They’re regular chances to check in, reorient, and remind yourself:

“I am moving through time on purpose,

with the Moon as my witness.” ✨
