Tarot & Oracle Foundations

Cards are one of the most beloved tools in witchcraft for a reason. They’re portable, symbolic, and offer a mirror to your inner landscape. Whether you’re pulling a single card in bed or crafting a full moon spread, tarot and oracle help you build trust in your intuition — one shuffle at a time.

🧩 Tarot vs. Oracle: What’s the Difference?

Tarot has a set structure — usually 78 cards, divided into:

  • Major Arcana (22 cards): Big themes, turning points, soul growth (The Fool, Death, The Star…).
  • Minor Arcana (56 cards): Everyday life, emotions, challenges, actions (like a magical deck of playing cards).

Tarot is great if you love structure, storytelling, and archetypes.

Oracle cards are more freeform. Decks vary wildly in number and theme — from animal spirits to moon cycles to gentle affirmations.

Oracle is ideal for direct messages, soft encouragement, or “What energy do I need today?” pulls.

🌿 Try both. Let your body tell you what’s right today.

✨ Getting Started with Your Cards

1. Cleanse your deck

New or gifted, it helps to energetically clear your deck before use. Try:

  • Smoke (herbs or incense)
  • Moonlight
  • Sound (bells, singing bowls)
  • Your breath or intention

2. Connect with it

Spend time just looking through the cards. Hold them. Shuffle. Ask:

  • “How do you want to work with me?”
  • “What do I need to learn from you?”

3. Keep it simple at first

Start with:

  • Daily Draw: Pull one card in the morning or evening. Ask, “What energy is with me today?” or “What do I need to reflect on?”
  • Check-In Pull: When you feel wobbly or unsure, try a 3-card spread:
    • What’s happening?
    • What’s underneath it?
    • What supports me now?

📚 Using Guidebooks (But Not Being Ruled by Them)

Guidebooks are helpful — especially when you’re new. But remember:

  • Your personal meaning matters.
  • Symbolism is felt in the body as much as it’s “understood.”
  • You’re allowed to disagree with the book.

Over time, your own interpretations will grow stronger. Write them down. Notice patterns.

📓 Grimoire Prompt:

Keep a card journal. Each entry might include:

  • The card(s) pulled
  • The question asked
  • Initial thoughts
  • What it meant in hindsight

🪄 Your Cards Are Not a Crystal Ball

Cards don’t hand you a pre-written fate. They reveal energies, invitations, and potential paths.

Try asking:

  • “What am I being invited to see right now?”
  • “What energy is influencing this?”
  • “What outcome is likely if I stay on this path?”
  • “What helps me shift or realign?”

They don’t decide for you — they help you decide with deeper insight.

🖤 Safety, Sovereignty, and Self-Honouring

  • If a card makes you anxious, pause. You don’t have to interpret in the moment.
  • If you’re feeling raw, consider using an oracle deck with gentler imagery.
  • You don’t owe anyone a reading — even yourself.
  • Cards are your ally, not your boss.

Your relationship with them will shift over time — that’s a good sign. It means you’re growing.
