“I Name Myself” – Magical Name Claiming Ritual

Type: Ritual

Purpose: Claiming or confirming a magical name, identity, self-definition

Best Moon Phase: Any – but New or Full Moon can feel especially potent

Elements: Air (words, identity), Fire (will), Water (emotion), Earth (embodiment), Spirit

A Note Before You Begin

  • You do not have to have a magical name to be a “real” witch.
  • Your magical name can be:
    • private (only you + your guides know it)
    • shared with a few trusted people
    • or fully public
  • Your magical name can change as you grow. This ritual marks where you are now—not forever shackles.

You can use this ritual to:

  • claim a new name
  • reaffirm a name you already use
  • retire an old name and welcome a new one

Tools & Ingredients

Use as many or as few as you like.

Core:

  • 1 candle in a color that fits the name or how you want to feel
    • white if unsure
    • or a color that feels like “your” energy
  • Paper + pen
  • A small bowl of water
  • A pinch of salt (or a little soil)

Optional:

  • Any item that feels connected to your magical identity:
    • favorite piece of jewelry
    • crystal
    • key
    • feather
    • charm
  • A mirror (hand mirror or any mirror you feel okay working with)
  • Incense or essential oil (if safe for you, your lungs, and pets)
  • Your grimoire, opened to your “Magical Name” page

Instructions

1. Prepare Your Space

Set your tools up:

  • Candle in the center
  • Bowl of water and pinch of salt/soil beside it
  • Paper and pen near you
  • Optional item(s) and mirror nearby

You can sit at a table, on the floor, or on your bed. This is your rite.

Take a moment to look at the setup and let your body know:

“Something special is about to happen.”

2. Ground & Arrive

Sit or stand comfortably.

Take 3–9 slow breaths, in and out.

Say:

“I am here.

I am in my body.

I am safe enough to explore and claim my name.”

Feel your feet or seat, notice the support beneath you.

3. Light the Candle & Create Sacred Space

Light your candle.

As you do, say:

“I light this flame to honor my becoming.

For this moment, this space is sacred.

Only what truly wishes me well is welcome here.”

You can imagine a soft glow extending around you like a protective circle.

4. Name Your Intention

Take your pen and paper.

Write a short intention, for example:

  • “This ritual is to claim my magical name.”
  • “This ritual is to affirm the name I already use in my witchcraft.”
  • “This ritual is to release an old name and welcome the one that fits who I am now.”

Place the paper under or near the candle.

Say aloud:

“This ritual is to _________________________________.”

Fill in with your own words.

5. Call in Support (Optional)

Only if this feels right to you; otherwise, skip.

You might say:

“Spirits of Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit,

witness and bless this naming.

Good, true, and loving ancestors,

especially those who remember their own magic—

if it is right, be with me now.

I invite only those beings who have my highest good at heart,

and I ask for clarity, courage, and kindness as I claim my name.”

Or, if you prefer no spirits:

“I call on my deepest, wisest self

to witness and guide this naming.”

6. Write Your Magical Name

If you already know your name:

  • Write it on the paper in front of you, as clearly and lovingly as you can.

If you’re still unsure:

  • You can write a few possibilities, or
  • simply write: “I am ready for my name to be revealed when the time is right.”
  • This ritual can be about asking + opening, not forcing an answer.

Once you’ve written something, hold the paper in both hands.

Take a breath and let yourself feel how the name (or the readiness) sits in your body.

7. Elemental Blessing of the Name

You’re going to bless the name through Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Spirit.

Earth – Grounding the Name

Touch the salt/soil with your fingertips.

Say:

“Earth, ground this name in my body and my life.

May this identity be rooted in truth and stability.”

If it feels good, lightly touch that salt/soil to the back of your hand or the paper.

Water – Emotional Truth

Dip your fingertips in the water.

Say:

“Water, wash away shame and old stories around who I’m ‘allowed’ to be.

May this name flow with my real feelings and needs.”

Gently touch your heart or forehead with the water.

Fire – Will & Power

Look into the candle flame.

Say:

“Fire, bless this name with courage and power.

May I grow into it with bravery,

and never use it to harm without necessity or purpose.”

You can (carefully) hold the paper closer to the fire for a moment—not burning it, just letting the warmth kiss it.

Air – Thought & Voice

Take a breath in, then gently blow once toward the paper.

Say:

“Air, bless this name in my thoughts and words.

May I speak of myself with honesty and respect,

and let this name be carried where it needs to be known.”

Spirit – Alignment

Place your hands over your heart, with the paper against your chest if that feels okay.

Say:

“Spirit, weave this name with my truest self.

If this name is right for me,

let it ring clearly in my soul.

If it is not yet right,

guide me gently toward the name that is.”

Pause and breathe. Notice any feeling—warmth, neutrality, tears, quiet, doubt.

Whatever arises is information, not failure.

8. Mirror Moment (Optional, but Powerful)

If you have a mirror and it feels emotionally safe:

  • Place it where you can see your face (or part of it, if full view is too intense).
  • Hold the paper with your name written on it.

Look at yourself, as much as you’re able.

Say:

“I see myself as a witch.

My name in magic is:

[Speak your magical name, or ‘unknown for now’].

If saying the name out loud feels too vulnerable, you can whisper it or say it only in your mind.

The key is that you acknowledge it.

You can add:

“I allow myself to grow into this name.

It does not demand perfection—only presence.”

If using the mirror feels too much right now, skip this step. You can always come back to it another day.

9. Seal the Name

If you’ve chosen a magical name:

You might say:

“From this moment on, in my magical work,

I answer to [Magical Name].

This name is a spell of who I am becoming.

I carry it with respect, curiosity, and care.”

If you still don’t know your name:

“From this moment on,

I give myself permission to discover my magical name

in my own timing,

without pressure or comparison.

My path is still valid,

with or without a name.”

If you have a special item:

  • Hold it and say: “May this [item] carry and protect my magical name. When I wear or touch it,may I remember who I am in my magic.”

10. Closing the Ritual

Thank any beings you called:

“Thank you, elements, ancestors, guides, and my own deeper self

for witnessing this naming.

You are respectfully released from this ritual.

Go in peace, as I go in peace.”

Then:

“This naming rite is complete.

The space returns to ordinary use.

My path and my name

(spoken or unspoken, known or unfolding)

continue in my life from this moment.”

Snuff the candle safely.

11. Ground & Write It Into Your Grimoire

Eat or drink something to ground—snack, tea, water, chocolate.

When you feel ready, open your grimoire to your Magical Name & Identity section and:

  • write the date
  • write the name you claimed
  • OR write:
    • “I performed a naming ritual. My magical name is still growing, and that’s okay.”

You might add a line like:

“For now, I am known in magic as: ____________.”

Leave room under it to add later notes—names can evolve just like paths.
